Project Background

This program is a multi-organization effort to encourage healthy habits for Flint Youth.

The program provides every K-12 student in the city of Flint with a $25 worth of vouchers they can redeem at the Flint Farmers' Market.

The program is organized by the Michigan State University/Hurley Children's Hospital Pediatric Public Health Initiative.  Funding from Detroit Piston's owner Tom Gores' FlintNOW Foundation as well as the National Basketball Players Association Foundation.  100K Ideas was brought in to help design the 2019 booklet.

Process

Balancing stakeholder needs

This public health initiative and the creation of this booklet required input, copy and assets from 5 different stakeholder groups, as well as with the printing firm.

Multiple rounds of reviews were necessary to make sure everyone's interests and needs were considered.

Design Inspiration

I wanted to make the voucher as colorful and fresh as the fruit's and veggies available at the Flint Farmer's Market.

User Considerations

This voucher booklet has 2 primary end users:
kids and their parents.

I needed to keep the text legible for parents and the booklet friendly enough for kids.

Changes from 2017

The original voucher booklet contained all the necessary details, but felt visually cramped.
To address this I spread the information between both sides of the coupons.

The colors felt dull too, compared with the vibrancy of the market. The booklet now makes liberal use of color, while the introduction page takes it's blue and red from the Piston's team colors.
